Mammography Guidelines
Based on years of scientific research, the American Cancer Society recommends that you have your first mammogram between 35 and 40 years of age. Exactly how soon and how often thereafter depends upon your personal risk factors and family history, but should be about every one to two years.
The Mammogram
A radiological technologist specializing in mammography will perform your mammogram. The technologist has completed a rigorous course and works under close supervision of the radiologist to assure the most accurate results from your examination.
A mammogram is simply a x-ray of the breast. It can detect a lump up to 3or 4 years before it can be felt.
Here's what you can expect at your visit:
You will be asked to undress above the waist.
A technologist will position you properly at the machine.
The technologist will place your breast on the machine and give adequate compression necessary for quality images.
Each breast will be x-rayed from the side and above
The radiologist will then review the mammogram to determine if any additional imaging is necessary. A detailed report will then be sent to your referring physician.
How will I learn the results?
The radiologist (a physician specialist) will study your mammogram. The results will be made available to you from your designated health care provider or practitioner, or the radiologist, depending upon who your initial contact was.
You will also receive a letter from our facility informing you in layman terms of your results.
How long does the exam take?
Usually about 15 to 30 minutes.
