First described in 1965, sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It affects individuals of all ages and often goes undiagnosed. Early diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea is important because it may be associated with irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to increased rates of mortality (e.g., drivers can fall asleep at the wheel), myocardial infarctions, strokes, industrial accidents and neurocognitive dysfunction (e.g., memory loss and confusion).
To meet the growing incidence of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders, the Dobbs Ferry Pavilion of St. John's established Sleep Diagnostics Services.
Up to four patients per night can be accommodated in comfortable Hospital rooms with wainscoting and wallpaper. An overnight stay is all it takes for technicians to monitor heart and brainwaves and airflow. A doctor reviews the tests and in an unprecedented two to four days, they learn the results.
If a positive diagnosis is received, the patient returns to the Hospital for a second exam a titration study that helps determine the type of treatment needed. The most common treatment is to prevent the airway from collapsing during sleep and cutting off breathing. The procedure, known as CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, involves wearing a mask over the nose during sleep. Continuous pressure from an air blower forces air through the nasal passage and keeps the pathways open.
A misconception many people have is that it's necessary to wear the mask around the house. In fact, it's only necessary to put it on right before sleeping. As a result of this, patients notice a big improvement in quality of life. Patients have more energy, and can do more.
Sleep Diagnostic Services is open to residents throughout the tri-state area with a doctor referral. The staff handles all the paperwork for the patients before testing, including pre-certification with most medical insurance carriers.
